Established in 1995, the Department of Microbiology has been at the forefront of education and research in the field of microbial sciences. Microbiology, as a diverse and dynamic discipline, encompasses the classification of microorganisms, microbial ecology, cell biology, and their wide-ranging applications in agriculture, food, and medicine.The department offers an in-depth study of microorganisms, with a particular emphasis on the biology of bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae, and protozoan parasites. The curriculum also integrates essential aspects of microbial biochemistry, physiology, and genetics, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the microbial world.Strong industry and institutional linkages enhance the academic experience through internships and guest lectures delivered by eminent academicians and professionals. The program not only prepares students for advanced studies and research but also highlights numerous career opportunities in various sectors.

The department boasts excellent infrastructure, including two state-of-the-art laboratories equipped with advanced instrumentation such as PCR, ELISA, phase contrast and dark field microscopes, fluorescent microscope, CO₂ incubator, BOD and COD incubators, cooling centrifuge, SDS-PAGE, Western blotting apparatus, and a fully functional cell culture facility. Need-based e-resources further enrich the academic environment and support innovative learning.

B.Sc., M.Sc. Applied Microbiology, M.Phil. and Ph.D. are the courses. Admissions for Under Graduation (B.Sc.), Post Graduation (M.Sc.) and M.Phil., have started, and for Ph. D., in the month of January and July.

The college is affiliated to University of Madras, and follows the Choice Based Credit System, with semester system of education, having internal and external evaluation pattern.

Yes. Vermi composting, Medical Coding and Clinical Research are conducted.

Government SC/ST Scholarships and low income group stipend through State Education Department is available. In addition to that, alumni fee concession (50% of tuition fee) is provided to students to pursue post graduation programmes in our College.

Students can work as Technicians Hospitals and Quality control officer cum scientist in Pharmaceutical industries, Food processing industries, Pollution control department, Agricultural department for organic farming and biofertilizers. Students can start their own company in the field of microbiology.
